Planning a trip can be time-consuming, but then you add a destination elopement to your itinerary, it may add a bit of extra stress to something that you expected to be stress-free. You may be thinking right about now, “How TF are we going to do this? Where do we start? I love the idea of getting married in such a beautiful place, but is it possible?”

The answer is YES, it is possible, and here is why…..

“KNOW WHERE YOUR TOWEL IS!”

- Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy

Within the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy universe, towels are regarded as indispensable equipment for experienced travelers since they can be put to a wide variety of uses. Consequently, a person who can quickly adapt to virtually any new situation is said to know where their towel is.

So YES, it is possible, and I’m going to tell you exactly how to do it because I’m your towel. Buckle up friends, because I have scoured the depths of the interwebs and have spent countless hours photographing elopements over the past decade to provide you with a plethora of information that’s going to make your dream wedding day a reality! This is not doom-scrolling. You will not get to the end of this page and feel you’ve wasted your time. The more you scroll, the better it gets. I promise you will be an experienced traveler when we’re done.

BEFORE YOU START - GATHER THESE SUPPLIES:

  • Your Partner (not needed, but highly recommend)

  • A best friend or close family member on speed dial.

  • Snacks & something to drink.

  • Phones on DND

  • A designated wedding notebook, binder, or journal.

  • A writing utensil (multi-color highlighters & pens are always fun)

Brace yourself…

You’re about to open a million tabs. Everything that’s in bold & underlined will take you directly to additional information about things I share with you. Click around and have fun exploring; just don’t get lost! Bookmark this guide now before it’s too late.

ARE YOU READY? LET’S GO!

When do you want to visit?

CHOOSE THE TIME OF YEAR AND SAVE THE DATE!

  • SPRING

    APRIL | MAY | JUNE

Greens, Blues, and Pinks are the colors of Springtime in Glacier. This time of year has perfect lighting, not too hot or cold! It’s one of my favorite times of the year. Springtime in Montana is April, May, and June. During this time, the days start to get longer, everything is fresh, and & the water is at its highest; waterfalls are flowing, there is minimal traffic, and temps are around ’ the 60s-’70s during the day and 40-50s in the evenings. It’s a very peaceful time of the year in the park. Not to mention getting that alpine glow- it’s incredible! If you arrive in April or May, you will have snowcapped mountains, a part of the landscape. Although the Going To The Sun Road is still closed, you will have access to Lake McDonald, West Glacier, and the outskirts of St. Marys in April, as well as most other parts of the park like Many Glacier, St Marys & Many Glacier starting in May.

  • SUMMER

END OF JUNE | JULY | AUGUST

July and August can provide clear views, or it can be hot and hazy from yearly wildfires. It’s a great time for accessibility. These months are the busiest for Glacier and have the warmest temperatures of the year. The snow has melted, and all roads are open with 10 p.m. sunsets. This time of year, the entire park is available to explore, including the historical Going To The Sun Road. If you want to see everything Glacier has to offer, I would plan for July - September.

  • FALL

SEPTEMBER | OCTOBER | EARLY NOVEMBER

Copper, Browns, Blues, Greens & Yellows are the colors of Fall in Glacier. Mid-September through the end of October is the best time for a fall wedding in Glacier National Park. This time of year everything starts to become quiet in the park with very minimal people. The weather starts to cool down, similar temps to spring, and the colors are stunning!

This time of year it’s not uncommon to get snow above 5,000ft elevation, and the Going To The Sun Road will be closed by mid-October. During the late fall and winter, weather forces most roads in the park to close. The portion of the Going-to-the-Sun Road from West Glacier to Lake McDonald Lodge is plowed and open year-round, weather permitting.

  • WINTER

    NOVEMBER | DECEMBER | JANUARY | FEBRUARY

If you want a winter wedding with more locations, snow-capped mountains, purple and pink sunsets, don’t mind the cold, and want privacy, November & December are very good months. Typically, you can drive all the way to the Trail of Cedars for the first 2 weeks of November.

It can get very cold in Glacier during the peak of winter, averaging daytime lows of 10 degrees with cold snaps as low as -25 in January. However, if you’re envisioning a magical winter wedding, frozen lakes, and snow covering every inch of the ground, Glacier Park in January & February is the perfect time.

Now That You’ve Picked The Season

IT’S TIME TO CHOOSE THE DATE!

The Best Dates To Elope In Glacier National Park

Monday-Thursday

Weekends in Glacier Park are really busy. Last year alone, we had over 2 million visitors, so I highly suggest going with an evening ceremony on a weekday. Saturdays can be very hectic in the park, and even with a permit, you may not be able to access certain parts of the park during the day. For example, Many Glacier is a trendy spot during the busy season. A lot of the time, if you don’t get there early enough, the parking lot gets full, and you will have to turn around. Doing this will only complicate your day. You’ll be a lot happier, and your ceremony will be more intimate with less chance of disruption.

OTHER GREAT REASONS TO ELOPE ON A WEEKDAY..

Availability is better! Most things you’ll need are booked in advance on weekends, reserve weekends for large events, or do not work weekends at all.

  1. Convenience of business hours! It is difficult to pick up things you’ll need from vendors when everything is closed on weekends. That includes picking up the marriage license and dropping it off.

  2. Having your elopement on the weekend will also cause you to work around the courthouse’s hours of operation. Depending on the weekend date, you’d be forced to pick up the license two days before your wedding and/or drop it back off at the courthouse two days after the ceremony. This has caused itinerary complications for many couples I’ve worked with in the past. Getting married on a weekday, you can pick up and drop off anytime (I will talk more about the license later).

WHAT ABOUT HOLIDAYS?

In addition to a Monday - Thursday, I would also stay away from any major vacation holidays (Labor Day, Memorial Day, 4th of July). These dates are busy times of the year in Glacier. If you’ll be traveling to the area around those dates, I would recommend having your ceremony at least 3 days before or a couple of days after. If you don’t mind crowds and waiting, this may not apply to you.

UNSURE OF WHICH DATE YOU WANT?

If you do not know your date and you want to check availability before making things official, I would reach out to me with your top 3 date choices, and I can let you know which ones are available to schedule.

This brings me to the next thing on the to-do list…

BOOK YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER

3rd Step

ONCE YOU KNOW THE SEASON AND YOUR TOP DATES

THEN YOU’RE READY TO BOOK YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER!

I'm not just saying this because I'm a photographer - it’s a very important next step for the planning. Your photographer should not only be the person who documents your day - but also your guide to magnificent places, perfect lighting, and all of the secret treasures Glacier National Park has to offer. Communicating with a photographer before planning your day will give you assistance & options you may not know you had.

THE BIGGEST QUESTION YOU PROBABLY HAVE IS

HOW TO PICK YOUR LOCATIONS!

GLACIER NATIONAL PARK & BEYOND

GLACIER PARK’S PERMITTED WEDDING LOCATIONS

The wedding location list that Glacier Park has created is very informative, however:

  • The photographs are not a true representation of the locations.

  • Several image dates are wrong and will give you the impression there isn’t snow on the ground in February.

You can use the GNP location link to get information about locations within the park. Just keep in mind the images of the areas and information about the images are not accurate.

WEDDING LOCATIONS IN GLACIER NATIONAL PARK

Frequently Asked Questions About Glacier Park Ceremonies:

Do we need a permit if it’s just the two of us? Yes. As of October 2023, all vow exchanges, elopements, ceremonies, weddings, or special events require a Special Use Permit through Glacier National Park. This is regardless of the size of the group, whether or not it is “officiated,” or if papers are being signed. If you’re exchanging vows, you need a permit.

Do we need a permit to just take photographs? No. As of October 2023, Current regulations are such that you do not need a permit go into the park to take pictures. If you have a permit to hold your wedding inside the park, you may take as much time as you want for pictures before and after your permitted time; and you may go anywhere in the park open to the general public.

PRO TIP:

If you decide to have family & friends accompany you, it’s best to have a limited number when getting married inside the park. The park rules limit ceremonies to specific locations in the park depending on the number of attendees & vehicles you have. As beautiful as the limited areas are, you’ll be much happier to see which locations are plausible if you adhere to a limited number of guests.

GLACIER PARK PERMITS &

MONTANA MARRIAGE LICENSE

THE GLACIER NATIONAL PARK WEDDING PERMIT

There are things you need to have planned out prior to applying for a permit. You will need to know the exact location within Glacier you’d like to have your ceremony, you’ll need to know the exact time you’d like to have your ceremony, and the exact date. You’ll also need to have a backup location, time, and date. Not just that, but before you even begin to pick a location and ceremony time, you’ll need to make sure the location is available for ceremonies, the location is available during the time of year you’ll be getting married, and the time of day works with the lighting of the day and your “Day Of” itinerary. Don’t worry - the first thing we will do once your date is booked is figure it out together! If you want to check out this information yourself, I’ve provided the steps below.

URGENT! ONCE YOU APPLY, YOU CAN NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES!

Before applying for your permit, you should discuss things with your photographer to go over these options and choose the best time for the ceremony based on your entire day. Choosing a time and location before discussing things with your photographer can and often does limit your options. This will be the first thing we do after booking your date!

HOW TO GET A WEDDING PERMIT

STEP 1. Download the Special Use Permit application.

STEP 2. Use the information found here, on the Glacier National Park Website, and on the Permitted Wedding Locations In Glacier information page to fill out your application with as much detail as possible.

  • Make sure to provide GNP with the exact ceremony location and time you want. Responses like “various” or “West Glacier” will not be approved, and “morning” or “afternoon” will not be approved. In the mean time, you can visit the Permitted Wedding Locations page to see which spots are available for a permit and the time frames they allow.

Step 3: Email your completed application (word or pdf format preferred) to glac_sup@nps.gov

Step 4: Pay the $125 non-refundable application fee online by visiting GNP Permit Payment Site.

Review the next steps on the Glacier National Park website on what to expect after you’ve turned in the application and made your payment.

YOUR MONTANA MARRIAGE LICENSE

The courthouse in Kalispell (Flathead County) is the nearest county to Glacier for getting a marriage license. If you like to pre-plan, visit the link below to fill out the application before your arrival.

Click Here To Access The Montana Marriage License Application

THINGS YOU’LL NEED TO PICK UP YOUR LICENSE:

  1. Birth certificate or driver’s license for proof of age.

  2. The fee for the license is $53.00

  3. Both of you are present.

  4. Make sure you’ve completed the application before going into the courthouse to retrieve the license.

AFTER YOU’RE MARRIED!

Once you’re married, you will have to return your signed marriage license to the courthouse. Things to keep in mind:

You cannot mail it in as you will need to deliver it in person.

The address for the Flathead County Court House is 920 S Main, Kalispell, MT 59901. You can pick up your license anytime after you’ve filled out the application. You can pick it up on the 3rd floor of the courthouse.

Courthouse hours are Monday-Friday, 8:00 am -4:30 pm, and the phone number is (406) 758-5660

MARRY YOURSELVES IN MONTANA!

The formal term is self-solemnization.

But what is it exactly?

FUN FACT! In the state of Montana, you do not need witnesses, or someone ordained to conduct your ceremony. You can self-solemnize, aka “marry yourselves”! Self-solemnization, also known as a self-uniting marriage, is one in which the couple conducts their wedding ceremony without the presence of a third-party officiant or witnesses. Any couple can essentially perform the legal solemnization of their marriage in the State of Montana, which will be recognized as a legal marriage throughout all of The United States. It’s a great option for some couples wanting a very private or self-guided ceremony. You do not need a special permit or license to do this; the only difference is one of you will sign as the “officiant.” You can also choose to have an officiant conduct your ceremony but leave out witnesses. Or, you can have witnesses and forgo an officiant. For witnesses, you can have me sign, a passerby, or you can leave them blank. It’s all up to you!

You can verify this information about self-solemnizing with the Flathead Clerk of Courts, who can be reached at (406) 758-5660

NAVIGATING THE FLATHEAD VALLEY & GLACIER NATIONAL PARK

FLATHEAD VALLEY TOWNS

I get asked a lot about the area, and most people tell me that it feels really confusing with all of the different places. So, I’ve created this map for an easy-to-navigate visual reference for those of you who are unfamiliar. I want to take you on a quick tour to get a better understanding of where things are at, where to stay, drive times, etc. You will find a map I have created to give you a visual representation of the area you will be visiting, nearby areas, and roads.

Here, you will find the big box stores such as Target, Walmart, Costco, etc. You will also find your marriage license here at the courthouse on the 3rd floor. Kalispell is centrally located and is a good waypoint for your entire stay if you prefer to stay close to all of the amenities. Kalispell is only 30 minutes from the West Glacier entrance.

Glacier International Airport is between Kalispell/Evergreen and Columbia Falls on Hwy. 2

This is where I live! This little town has grown into such a beautiful stop right before West Glacier, Glacier National Park. Columbia Falls is where I grew up and it has similar things as Whitefish accept this area is a tad smaller.

You will find breweries, local parks, restaurants, convenience stores, historical sites, and much more! Chances are, if you’re staying anywhere in the valley you will be driving through Columbia Falls.

YOU CAN FIND EVERYTHING THERE IS TO KNOW ABOUT COLUMBIA FALLS HERE

Flathead County, Montana

These two small towns are located on the shores of Flathead Lake! Bigfork on the East Shore and Lakeside on the West Shore. If you’re main attraction is Glacier National Park, these two towns might be out of the way - but they’re worth it! Previous clients have found Airbnb’s in these areas and loved staying in them. You’ll find that both of these towns have a lot of charm & are worth a visit. Lakeside is also home to our other Ski Resort: Blacktail Mountain.

APGAR VILLAGE & WEST GLACIER

(Flathead County, Montana)

West Glacier is not only a part of Glacier National Park, but it’s also a little town that borders the GNP boundary. You’re actually not in GNP until you go through West Glacier and cross the bridge that goes over the Middle Fork River. West Glacier will lead you to Apgar Village. From Apgar, you have Lake McDonald and the historic Lake McDonald Lodge, Camas Road, Inside North Fork Rd, Middle Fork River, Avalanche Lake, Trail of the Cedars, Going To The Sun Road with several scenic stops, Logan Pass and so much more.

West Glacier & Apgar is a great central location in Glacier National Park and is home to the West Glacier Village. This part of Glacier provides so many enjoyable opportunities such as recreation, site seeing, dining, and historic shops, including West Glacier Cafe, Going To The Sun Mini Golf, Glacier Raft Company, West Glacier Mercantile, Glacier Outfitters, Eddies Cafe as well as several lodging opportunities such as the new West Glacier RV Park, and their historical Belton Chalet, Lake McDonald Lodge, and the Apgar Village Lodge & Cabins.

INSIDE THE PARK!

GLACIER NATIONAL PARK DESTINATIONS

Glacier Park is made up of five areas. You have Polebridge, West Glacier (Apgar), Many Glacier (Swift Current), Two Medicine (East Glacier) and St. Marys. Whichever spot you choose to visit will have its own places to see.

TWO MEDICINE, EAST GLACIER

(Glacier County, Montana)

Two Medicine is also known as East Glacier & vs. versa. If you hear either of those names, just know they’re in the same place. Two Medicine offers you: Running Eagle Falls, Pray Lake, Two Medicine campground, and Two Medicine Lake & drive around the top to get the amazing views from a lookout point. These spots are all within 5 minutes of each other and easily accessible. If you’re planning a short day, this is a great option as well!

BOWMAN LAKE, POLEBRIDGE

(Flathead County, Montana)

Polebridge is loaded with opportunity. This area starts to open in May, and there are three ways to get here. You can take the North Fork Road through Columbia Falls, you can take Camas Road, located in West Glacier, or you can take the remote inside North Fork Road, also located in West Glacier. The quickest way to get there from Columbia Falls is the North Fork Rd.

Check out the Polebridge website to get more information on the area.

ST MARY'S, EAST GLACIER

(Glacier County, Montana)

St. Marys is stunning, with loads of opportunities for your special day. If you’re looking for jagged rock cliffs, water, mountains, and half-day hikes - this is a great spot! St. Marys can be accessed from Going To The Sun Road, or you can access St. Marys by taking Hwy 2. If you take Hwy 2. I highly encourage you to take Looking Glass Hill Rd through East Glacier and connect to Hwy 89 for the most scenic views! It’s a little extra time cutting up on Looking Glass Hill, but it’s worth the extra time. A few spots in St. Marys are St. Marys Lake, St. Marys, Baring & Virginia Falls, Rising Sun, Sun Point Nature Trail, Wild Goose Island, and several local secrets!

SWIFT CURRENT, MANY GLACIER

(Glacier County, Montana)

Many Glacier is beautiful and also known as Swift Current (Swift Current Lake). Just like Two Medicine (East Glacier), you will hear this place referred to as both! If you’re planning on heading to Many Glacier from West Glacier, plan on a 3-hour drive and stay a night or two.

Glacier National Park’s

ROADS & HIGHWAYS

Glacier National Park is very popular during the summer months, drive times in and around Glacier National Park vary due to varying speed limits, traffic, weather, and overcrowded parking lots. Travel to the park may also be delayed due to road construction projects in outlying areas. You can subscribe to receive live text updates on current Road & Trail status.

THERE ARE 2 WAYS TO ACCESS WEST GLACIER & EAST GLACIER

Going To The Sun Road

“Going To The Sun” is the historical roadway that takes you through the park starting in Apgar (West Glacier), up to Logan Pass, and over to St. Marys. GTTSR’s main speed is 25 mph in high alpine areas, and 40 mph in lower areas.

Highway 2

Highway 2 is a scenic highway that takes you around the park to East Glacier. Once you’re in East Glacier you can continue to head to St. Marys, Many Glacier, or you can turn into East Glacier to access Two Medicine. Highway 2 is used during the months that the GTTSR is closed. You can access any part of the park (except Polebridge) from either road. I recommend picking which road to use based on the time of year and drive times. You can find those HERE.

The North Fork Road & Camas Road

The North Fork Road will take you up to Polebridge. You can access the North Fork Road through Columbia Falls or through West Glacier via Camas Road. Camas Road is located in West Glacier.

Going To The Sun Road

The Going To The Sun Road will be the historical road connecting West Glacier and St Marys; with Logan Pass being the half way point.

Logan Pass

Logan Pass is the half way point between West Glacier and St. Marys. Unless you plan on hiking up to Hidden Lake or Hidden Lake Overlook, and getting to this spot early - I highly recommend using an alternative location to elope. It’s the main hub for the sun road and always packed. There are places less than a mile away from the Logan Pass visitors center I can show you that are easy to get to and accessible anytime of the day.

DAY HIKES

If you’re wanting a remote location to say your vows and you love to hike - choosing to do a hike on your day is a great idea! We can choose from this list of different hikes throughout the park for your day! Most hikes are a minimum of 5 hours when you add in ceremony, photographs, breaks, and scenic stops. These locations can only be done if you schedule 8+ hours. If you have a trial in mind but do not see it here, let me know! I’m up for any adventure. Depending on the trail you choose will depend on how much time we will have for pre-ceremony preparations and after-hike documentation.

WHY SHOULD YOU CHOOSE TO ELOPE WITH ME?

I’LL LET MY COUPLES DO THE TALKING

“Here are three reasons why you should reach out to Aundrea immediately.”

Aundrea's "Photographer" title understates to the adventure, consultation, and genuine joy she offers. If you're from out of state, if you're looking for a local experience and maybe some stylish photos too, then here are three reasons why you should reach out to Aundrea immediately. (We hired her for our engagement shoot, a 2021 wedding, and an interim covid-elopement).

1. We googled/knew the beauty surrounding Glacier, but we would never have known the 15-mile 4x4 trail + scenic mountaintop Aundrea suggested for our elopement. Aundrea drove us up in one Jeep, family/friends in a 2nd Jeep. Way beyond what you expect from your photographer and lots of fun. Apart from having a mountain top to yourself, the coolest part was the surprise our friends/family had. No one was expecting an overlanding adventure up the mountain. They all arrived smiling ear to ear.

2. Super consultative, responsive, and professional. We wanted to be out of view, wanted scenic, wanted our dog present, and didn't want to spend the entire day driving. So what does Aundrea do? She sent us an epic photo portfolio of options to consider. Mountain tops, rivers, fire lookouts, etc... We chose one and then she planned the entire day. Departure time, location, sunset, angles, etc... all hands off, well beyond expectation from a photographer.

3. She's rad, super cool, and warm personality. We vibe'd over music during our engagement shoot. She showed us the bars in Columbia Falls, and while we were 4x4'ing up the mountainside, she had a genuine excitement & conversation that really eased the moment for my fiancé and I.

Put it all together, we were lucky to find her and gracious for stories (& photos!) we'll have to share. Aundrea planned, organized, led and, of course, photographed everything. Without her, we would have made concessions. She's worth every dollar she charges for the photography alone. Her willingness to make your day beyond perfect is what makes her exceptional.

“She is one of the best people you’ll ever meet.”

If you are looking to elope in the Glacier National Park area - Aundrea is hands down the BEST photographer you could pick! Outside of her amazing photography skills, she knows the surrounding area and park like the back of her hand. She helped plan & create the perfect day for our elopement - from location scouting before our big day, driving us to and from locations, to coming prepared with everything from shoeshine and snacks - on top of capturing every little moment during the day. And outside of being such a talented photographer - she is one of the best people you'll ever meet. We instantly connected beyond photographer and client - she joined us a month later to celebrate our elopement announcement with family & friends. I couldn't recommend her more! Anyone who is looking for a photographer in Western Montana should hire Aundrea

“Aundrea was the friend we needed!”

My husband and I eloped to Montana in August 2021. We chose MT because I stumbled onto Aundrea's site and instantly fell in love with her documentary/candid style. On our first FaceTime call, she made us feel at ease and assured us she would help every step of the way. Needless to say, Aundrea exceeded every expectation, reassured every worry, and truly helped us plan our intimate elopement. She helped with the little details I got stuck on, had fantastic recommendations (shout out to our private chef Kallai and barber Tucker!), and even picked up the flowers the morning of. By the time we finally met Aundrea, we felt like we had known her forever. It was just my husband and I the day of, and Aundrea was the friend we needed as our day unfolded. She caught every moment without feeling like there was a camera in our faces which was super important for us. Aundrea was an integral piece of our elopement and the whole Montana trip. Lastly, we could not be more obsessed with our photos. They are phenomenal and breathtaking. Most importantly, they are us. Thank you Aunny!
